The Complete Garment Care Guide: Make Your Clothes Last 3× Longer

Why garment care matters

The average Indian household replaces 30–40% of its wardrobe every year and most of it isn’t because the clothes are out of style. They’re worn out, faded, misshapen or stained beyond saving. The truth is, with five minutes of the right care after every wear, the same wardrobe can last two to three times longer.

Garment care isn’t about expensive products. It’s about understanding what a fabric needs, washing it the right way, and storing it so gravity and humidity don’t ruin it between wears.

Sort before you wash

Sorting is the single biggest favour you can do your wardrobe. Mixing colours, weights and fabrics in one load is the #1 reason whites turn grey and delicate items lose shape.

  • Whites, lights and darks in three separate piles
  • Heavy items (jeans, towels) away from delicates (silk, linen)
  • New colours washed alone for the first 2–3 cycles
  • Anything with metal hardware turned inside out

Wash smart, not hot

Cold water (≤30 °C) is enough for 80% of everyday laundry, protects colour, and uses 90% less energy. Reserve warm water for whites, bedsheets and heavily soiled workwear.

Use half the detergent the bottle recommends most washing machines are over-dosed, and detergent residue is what dulls fabric over time.

Dry the right way

Direct Mumbai sun is brutal on coloured cotton and synthetics. Dry darks inside out, in shade. Hang shirts on shaped hangers, not pegs, to keep shoulders crisp. Knits should always dry flat to avoid stretched necklines.

Store like a stylist

Fold knits and jeans. Hang structured items: shirts, blazers, dresses. Never store anything damp even slightly. A small silica sachet in the cupboard keeps monsoon mildew away.

When to call a professional

Silk sarees, woollen suits, embroidered ethnic wear, leather and anything labelled ‘dry clean only’ belong in expert hands. A single mistake at home can cost more than years of professional cleaning.
